Hello Readers. I love to sew but I am also a homeschooling mom. I have 3 kids. They are 27, 23 and 8. I homeschooled my older 2 children and we had a lot of fun so I am homeschooling the youngest too. Some of the activities I did the first time around have been forgotten but a few were so fun that I am doing them again. Today's project is one of those "do-overs".
Long, long ago this was how you found your way from town to town.
To make this project I used some long flat sticks to paint as you like.
We are going for a colorful look. We used any old acrylic paint we had on hand. This will not be out in the rain so we didn't need to make it weather proof.
We painted the sticks on both sides and let them dry overnight. We had 10 because that was how many were in the pack.
I used a pencil to write the names of the cities we wanted. I wanted to make sure I spaced out the letters neatly. I used these permanent markers to write on the painted sticks. It was easier than trying write letters with paint. The permanent markers showed up really well.
This part is fun because you can write the names of real places you
want to travel to, places you have been, or the location of friends and
relatives. I used Google maps to get the millage from my house.
When our sticks were labeled we were ready to attach them to the pole. This is a dowel rod from home depot. If you are outdoorsy, you could scavenge a long stick from the woods but store-bought is fine.
I tied my painted sticks to my pole with these cords. (I told you we wanted ours to be colorful.) Any kind of string or twine would work.
I wrapped the cord around the stick and the pole... and I crossed the cord over itself in the back...
And wrapped the cord around the front, crossed the cord over itself again...
and tied it in a knot in the back. I cut off the excess cord to keep it neat.
This is my finished sign. My youngest helped me every step along the way.
We made this sign with a future trip in mind. All the cities I am going to are on the sign. This is my first stop. You could make this with kids and it would be a fun classroom display. Thanks for reading along, now go make something fun for yourself.
***Year End Update- This was fun and helpful to learn more world geography. That helped a lot to keep my youngest entertained while I was on a trip.
