Saving a Vintage Dress; Making a Scarf

Hello Readers. My project today is one of my new all-time favorites. As you can see it is a scarf . I love the colors and the impressionist water color look it has. It is going to get a lot of wear.

It started as this very small vintage dress. It was so tiny It wouldn't even zip up on my dress form. (Or myself.) But it was so pretty. I love vintage/old clothing so much. It is always fun to find a way to wear it.

It had some problems. The lining was missing and some edges were raw. I could deal with that but the under arm and neck areas were yellowing. I tried washing and soaking it but the yellow areas wouldn't go away.

I thought about what to do with this dress for a long time. I even considered framing it. I thought about making it into a skirt too. I didn't think I could wear it as often if it was a skirt. I don't have many scarves, and I could wear it more often. So, step one was to cut off the top yellowing portion. This left me with a big circle of fabric.

I tucked the raw edge under and stitched it down. The fabric is soft and made an instant infinity scarf.
As a nursing mom I discovered that scarves are great to use as nursing covers too. I like using a large scarf if I am out in public with my little guy. I think the scarf is more discrete than a baby blanket. People notice a blanket over you but don't seem to notice a large scarf, even if it is serving the same purpose.

I just noticed my daughters finger in the picture on the right. Oops!

Thanks for reading, now go make something fun for yourself.

That is simply beautiful material and your idea for it is perfect. Will have to pass on this idea to my breastfeeding daughter as well.

Thanks! I loved this material too. I couldn't let it go to waste in a dress that was damaged.

It's wonderful to give old or vintage items a new lease of life! You are so inspirational, I am going to go through my wardrobe next week and see what I can upcycle! Thank you! Hazel x

Thanks for the comment Hazel. I wish I could have saved the whole dress but sometimes it doesn't work out. I think you can always save some of it though. I hope you find some treasures in your closet.
