Hello Readers. Grab a cup of tea and settle in because this might be a long post. It all started with this striped knit dress. It was navy blue and I can't seem to stay away from navy blue. I also had this navy blue dress that my daughter didn't want anymore. I decided to put them together.
This dress didn't do anything good for me. It was absolutely shapeless, but it is soft like a t-shirt. It is very comfortable.
I made new side seams and made the dress a little smaller. I didn't want it to be too tight but it really needed some shape.
The dress was a quick fix and it looked so much better.
So what was I going to do with this button down dress?
I thought it would make a great light weight jacket. I shortened it and made the hem length just at the bottom of the pockets. I didn't want to lose those handy pockets. I used white thread because that was the color of all the stitching already.
I looked at it for quite a while and decided I really wanted this new jacket to be a vest. I cut the sleeves off while it was still on my dress form. There was no going back now.
I stitched the edge under and I had a vest.
I was happy with the new length and the sleeveless vest.
I liked these 2 pieces together and I am sure the vest will be a new favorite.
I also thought this dress would make a great shirt. I haven't shortened it yet. I just folded it under to try it on. What do you think? Dress or shirt? Let me know in the comments.
Thanks for reading along now go make something fun for yourself.
***Year End update- This dress is still a dress. I never made it into a top. I love the little vest too. It is a perfect layering piece.

I love outfits that just come together, like this vest and dress! You could wear the dress a few times, and then decide whether to cut it down to a top. I like dresses and dressing up, but tops are more useful to my retiree lifestyle. Your mileage may vary!
I love the striped piece as both a dress and a shirt! Which do you think you'll get more use out of?
Hello Ladies
Thanks for the comments. I like the dress very much but I might wear a shirt more often.
I haven't cut it yet though.

I agree with KD, I mignt wear it a few times as a dress and then make the top, the best of both.

Hi Cynthia,
I like that idea too. That way I can have it all.
Thanks for reading along,

I absolutely LOVE that as a dress. Sometimes practicality has to win out, in which case I like the idea of wearing it for awhile as a dress, then making a shirt. I wouldn't have thought of that as a solution!
Hi Jenny-o,
I liked that idea too. Win-win!
