Tank Top to Skirt

 Hello Readers. My favorite color must be blue because I always gravitate towards blue in everything. Even in little things like this tank top. I don't remember how I got it but the blue appealed to me. I probably grabbed it at a clothes swap because of the color.

This tank was really well made. The fabric was a nice weight and it had a full lining. The lining gave me an idea. What if it was a skirt? It was already lined like a skirt would be. And I would love a blue skirt.

I cut the straps and the binding along the top edge to get them out of my way.

 

I had this blue elastic in my stash and decided to use that for the waistband. It was very soft and would be comfortable to wear. 

 

I didn't cut anything else off the tank top. I just added the elastic around the top.

 

The elastic worked perfectly. I wore the new skirt backwards. What was the back of the tank top became the front of my skirt. The shape and extra room in the chest was better suited to my bum. It worked perfectly.

 

I love mixing patterns so I went with this Hawaiian shirt. It has a cute vintage vibe. My daughter called this look "Coastal Maximalist".

Going to Work in the Heat

Hello Readers. Thanks for coming to the blog and reading this post. There is a lot going on in our world. I will be the first to admit that sewing isn't nearly as important as the massive racial and social justice movement going on right now. I think it's natural if you are more focused on that right now.

I still have to go to work...

It is getting really hot...

 I refashioned these to wear today...

So I figured I would post this blog entry.

This seemed like such a great summer shirt. It had a built in bra and it was super soft. The problem was that the key-hole in the bust was really too much. It was like a cleavage coin slot. The armholes were also a little too low on the sides. There was a little too much side boob showing.

I used my sewing machine and closed the key-hole. Now more cleavage show.

I also took the armholes in a little. It was enough to keep everything tucked in where it was supposed to be.

I shortened the pants quite a bit. I wanted some cropped wide legged pants. I made some last summer that were great for hot days. I really liked them but I can't fit into them right now. (Thanks Corona!) A new pair is just what I need.

(I was sewing and my youngest was playing Legos next to me. I made the yellow house.)

This pants turned out great for casual office wear. And tank tops are always useful alone or under something else.

Save the Jewels!

Hello Readers. I found this brown knit dress at a clothes swap and loved the jewels around the neckline. The dress was too tight around the chest and the high/empire waist made me look pregnant. I couldn't wear it but, I really wanted to. It had jewels on it! It was shiny! It was sparkly!

The dress really needed a new top, the skirt was fine. I decided to use this big t-shirt for that. I could make it into whatever kind of top I wanted.

It doesn't look like it but, I was wearing shorts in this picture.

I started by cutting the top off the skirt. The skirt had a nice waistband already. That would be really handy. And the knit material wouldn't fray so I could just cut it off.

All I needed to do was make a small hole in the waistband, thread some elastic through, connect the elastic ends, and close the hole in the waistband. In no time I had a skirt.

I cut the entire collar piece off the dress. 

I used a favorite tank top as a guide and cut out a new tank from the green t-shirt. I thought green would work well with the jewels because some of them had a green tone to them.

Here is the tank top after I cut it out. I made new side seams first. The arm holes look rough but I turned them under, stitched them down, and they looked great.

Here is the finished tank top. The collar is sewn on the neckband of the shirt. It covers the original neckline of the t-shirt.

The skirt sits at my real waist now. I like that better.

***Year End update-  I love this shirt. I wear it all the time, even in winter. It is great to layer under a sweater. I like the skirt but I wear the shirt more.
