Maxi Skirt to Sundress

Hello Readers. I used this very, very long maxi skirt to make a sundress. I am short so I wasn't surprised that this skirt was too long. I thought it would make a great sundress if I played around with it a little.

Before and after.

#shortgirlproblems right here.

When I say that I tried on the dress and played around with ideas, I mean it. I wanted a top and a skirt from this skirt and I tried all different ideas to make that happen.

After a lot of thought, I cut the bottom of the skirt off. That was going to be my top. I didn't have that much fabric to work with.

I used my dress form to make a top. I used my serger to put it together.

I wanted to make some kind or ruffle strap but I really didn't have enough fabric. I had to work with what I had so I made 4 tubes and those were my straps. I needed to iron them flat and then attach them to my top.

I sewed the straps on and the top was done.

Well, I did some hemming and ironing, then I was done.

My dress is perfect for the hot summer days we are having. It's lightweight and comfortable. Stay cool out there everyone. Thanks for reading along, now go make something fun for yourself.

***Year End Update- This dress was perfect for the summer heat and I wore it a lot.

The Hot Sauce Dress

Hello Readers. How are you doing today? I hope you are doing well and doing good where ever you are today. I am feeling awesome today because of this new sundress.

I found this fun men's shirt at a swap while back and love the graphic on the front. It was awesome! I could have been left alone and worn as pajamas (Quarantine means pajamas 24/7 right?) but I wanted more from this shirt.

I began by cutting out 2 rectangle pieces from the front and back of the shirt. I wanted the hot sauce image to be centered in the front. I made a basic tube dress shape.

I also cut some strips of fabric to use later as shoulder straps.

I made a casing at the top of the dress for some elastic. The elastic pulled the dress in and made the top fit well. I didn't want any gaping or cleavage. I attached those 4 pieces of fabric I cut earlier in front and back to make some shoulder straps. They tie as tight as needed to make the dress fit well too. They are also wide enough to cover bra straps. (That is nice if you nursed 3 children and you need a real bra.)

This dress has some stretch to it so it was easy to fit.

And its so much fun to wear!

The Maxi Skirt Dress

Hello Readers. I love warm weather when I can wear comfortable sundresses. An easy way to make a great sundress is to refashion a maxi-skirt.

Maxi-skirts never fit me correctly because I am very short. I like them because they give you so much knit fabric to work with. I could have just shortened the skirt into a shorter skirt but, let's make a dress.

The first thing I did was cut off the finished hem at the bottom. I made sure to cut off the complete seam with all its stitching and I saved it for later.

I made a new hem at the length I wanted. It is nice to refashion your own dress because you can choose the length you want. It could be a mini dress or it could be below the knee. You're in charge!

Now back to that cut off hem from earlier. I used that to make some straps and the leftover piece made a great little belt to tie around the waist. It gave the dress some shape.

The finished dress was so comfortable. I know not everyone likes spaghetti straps and it is easy to cover my shoulders with a little cardigan.

*Year end update-This was a great summer dress. Perfect for a hot day when I had to look like I made an effort to dress up but I didn't really want to.
