Tablecloth to Top 2

 Hello Readers. Yesterday I posted about a shirt I made from a tablecloth. I liked it and I was super happy with it but what about the scraps? Let's talk about them. They were almost a shirt already. So... I made a second shirt. 

My second shirt from this tablecloth. 

I made this shirt first. 

The table cloth pattern looked great on the back of the shirt. 

This piece is what was left from the tablecloth when I was finished with the first shirt. When I looked at it I thought it looked like a halter style top. 

I cut the top bits off so I could get to the sewing machine. 

I turned all the cut edges under and stitched them down. 

I needed a string of some kind to tie around my neck. I sewed some bias tape closed and used that. 

I made a narrow casing across the top of the front of the shirt. I put the string through and tied it around my dress form's neck. This was coming together pretty well. 

I needed to close the back somehow. 

I used elastic to gather the top edge and sewed the 2 sides together.

Tablecloth to Top 1

 Hello Readers. This was a pretty linen tablecloth but it did not fit any table I had. I thought it would make a really cool top that I could wear all spring and summer. It was a really fun project to make, read on and see for yourself.

I cut the table cloth in half down the middle.

 

Here is the half I will use for my new shirt. It is folded in on the sides so I can get an idea what it will look like as a shirt. I like the brown edges along the hem and up the middle. 

I used this shirt as a pattern for the arm holes and neckline. 

I needed a sleeve pattern. I cut the sleeve off this shirt to use as a pattern. 

I cut my new sleeves from the other half of the tablecloth. 

 

This was my basic idea, I just needed to put the sleeves in place and finish the neck line.
 

I used clips to put the sleeves in place so I could sew them in. I like clips because pins can and will stab me in my hands and fingers. Ouch!

I sewed the sleeves in place. 

I added bias tape to the cut edges around the neckline. 

I also added bias tape ties in the front to keep in closed. 

The design is most prominent on the back of the shirt.

Tablecloth to Cottage Core Top Upcycle

 Hello Readers. I used an old table cloth to make a top. You might be asking yourself why did I do that? I have had this table cloth for so long (20 years!) that one end got torn and I needed to fix it or I needed to do something like this.

I liked this table cloth but it had a some fraying on one edge and it didn't match my house anymore.

I decided to use this pattern by McCall's to make a simple top. I chose it because the short sleeve top was a loose fit and kind of boxy. This table cloth didn't have any stretch to it so I needed something roomy enough to be comfortable.

I cut out the short sleeve pattern pieces. You can see I folded the pattern to make it shorter. This is going to cut the length in my finished shirt. I placed the pattern piece on the table cloth so I could have the little ruffle at the hem.

I put my shirt together as directed. I even made the neck facing. I usually try to avoid them because they always seem to give me trouble. This went really well (Thanks McCall's) I ironed the whole shirt thoroughly.

I added the little ruffle to the sleeves just for fun. The fabric was giving me cottage core vibes so extra ruffles seemed appropriate.

I added my tag. I always do this for items I make "from scratch". It's just fun.

My daughter gave me some great corduroy jeans. They were perfect for fall and perfect for this shirt. I took in the waist a bit and of course I shortened the length. #shortgirlproblems

This shirt turned out well and it felt like the right vibe for a cool fall day. Thanks for reading along, now go make something fun for yourself.
