Removing the Hood From My Hoodie

*Update - Hello Readers. It's time for an update. This was simple refashion but it is one of my most popular posts. The hood on this jacket was heavy and made the jacket uncomfortable. The hood became a collar. Easy-Peasy!
*Originally Posted-4/5/16 Hello Readers. My project today is a hood removal. I liked this jacket that was handed down to me, but the hood was way too heavy. The hood is lined nicely but the material weighed it down and it pulled the jacket down in the back. This caused the front neckline to ride up. I felt like I was being choked when I wore it. So, I never wore it.
I saw a post that gave me the idea to change it. It was written by a woman named Saga. You can read the post by Saga, here.  She altered a child's hoodie for safety reasons and I wanted to pass them along. She gives details and measurements that make this an easy alteration. (Thanks Saga!)

You can see where I cut my hood off at the same angle as the neckline of the jacket. I used my hubby's sweatshirt collar as a straight edge.

I left a little extra for the seam allowance.
*I tucked the fabric in and stitched it down.

I tried to pop the collar so it would be more visible. It looks pretty dorky. The top picture is best at showing how nice it looks. I like the red collar and how it matches the exposed red seams all over this jacket.
*Did y'all pop your collar back in the day?

Thanks for reading. Now go make something fun for yourself.

Dress? Tunic? Sweatshirt?

Hello Readers. Nothing beats a soft cozy sweatshirt, right? I have seen some sweatshirt dresses in stores and I liked the cozy casual style. This blue sweatshirt dress/tunic came from a swap for free. It fit in my plan for refashioning for free in 2021.

This sweatshirt could use a little resizing. The sleeves were too long. (#shortarms) The seams and the long sides made the whole tunic feel a little ... off.

The plain navy blue wasn't bad but can we jazz it up a little? Sure we can.

I have been using this black and gray hoodie to make other clothes because it did not fit. I will use some pieces of this hoodie to add some interest. This hoodie was really soft and was a nice addition to everything I have made from it. It was a hand-me-down too.

I started by taking the hood off the hoodie and pinning it onto the tunic. It was easy to sew this onto the tunic with my sewing machine. It would add a little interest to the neckline.

I also added the wrist binding from the hoodie to the tunic too. I cut the sleeves shorter and then stitched the wrist binding on. I have short arms so I wanted the sleeves to be shorter. The binding helps make it all look more finished. And now I can push up the sleeves and they will stay pushed up.

I decided to make the dress a bit narrower on the sides. I also wanted the whole tunic to be even along the bottom hem. It was longer on the sides than it was in the middle.

This is a fun casual tunic. I added leggings to keep it all covered. And check out these giant pockets. I liked to comfortable roomy fit of this tunic.

This tunic is perfect for being active and going for a walk. Spring? Is that you? Thanks for reading along, now go make something fun for yourself.

***Chickie's Year End Review-I wear this sweatshirt a lot. I like it when I am walking especially because of those pockets. I am a sucker for big pockets.

Fun With Flannel

Hello Readers. I have been having fun swapping parts of clothing with parts from other clothing. Read on and you can see what I mean.

I started with a few items that all had black or black and white as the color palette. The flannel shirt and the hoodie just didn't fit well in the sleeves. I needed about 6 inches of arm. I was having the same problem with the hoodie. Short arms are a serious problem in my everyday life.

I decided to do some cutting and swapping. I shortened the sleeves of the flannel shirt. I went for a 3/4 length sleeve. It was more flattering and I could use my hands. Win-win! I used the waistband of the hoodie to reshape this flannel. It is narrower, shorter and it is pulled in at the waist a little. I can pull it over my head.

This black skirt fit but it was SO full. It felt too twirly. Is that even possible? I guess it is, because that is how I felt. I liked the length though.

I decided to do some more cutting. I took a big chunk of fabric from each side. It looks like a bat here but I promise it is a skirt. It is still full but not quite as puffy.

I thought the new fit of these clothes was great and I always love separates that I can mix and match with other clothes.

I am still working with the rest of that hoodie. You will see it in a future post. Thanks for reading along, now go make something fun for yourself.

***Chickie's Year End Review-Where is this shirt. I love it and I haven't been able to find it for a while. I have no idea what happened to it. Very sad.

Comfort Clothes

Hello Readers. How are you? Are you a little panicked at the thought of the United States in a complete melt-down? Yes, me too. I have been eating comfort food and wearing comfort clothes. And avoiding too much news so I don't go crazy. My post today is about comfort clothes. Flannel is soft, fuzzy, comfortable and comforting. I hope so anyway.

This refashion started months ago when I saw these 2 shirts at the store. I liked the plaid and solid combination. Did I buy one? No. You know by now that I am cheap as heck and I didn't buy anything. But I thought about how I could make something like this for myself.

I had a gray and white flannel that was handed down to me from a friend (Thanks Miriam!) and a gray and white hoodie that has been around for ages. Guess what? They are getting married!

I started by cutting the flannel shirt open in the front and removing the button placket.

I used my dress form to arrange and pin the flannel and the hoodie together.

I used my sewing machine to connect the hoodie zipper and hood to the flannel shirt. I only connected the zipper and the hood. The rest of the hoodie was cut away.

I love that it has a zipper. It is so easy to layer and remove if I get hot.

I can also show a little of the Baby Yoda shirt my mom gave me for Christmas! (Thanks Mom!)

I can still tuck the shirt in as well. What more could I want? (Maybe social and political stability? That is for another blog post I think.)

Thanks for reading along, now go make something fun for yourself. Or go eat some comfort food. Whatever helps you get through these times. I went for chips and brownies.

Peace.

***Chickie's Year End Review- I loved this plaid shirt. I accidentally bleached it with a load of towels and it got ruined.

Joining Starfleet

Hello Readers. My project is the fastest refashion I have ever done. It took about 1 minute. Seriously, 1 minute.
 Engage!

It started with this hoodie I found at a clothes swap. It was a nice hoodie. It was warm, soft and in brand-new condition. What's not to love?
 Beam me up Scotty!

Well, it had a logo for a cruise ship of some sort or another. These kind of company logo items are common in thrift stores too. (I don't work for a cruise line and I don't like boats. Or water. I saw "Titanic". I am not going on a cruise. Ever.) Sometimes you can pick out the stitches and remove the logo on an item like this. But what if I just covered it up?
 Set phasers to stun!

I could use this super cool "Star Trek" iron-on patch to cover the logo. Wouldn't that be more fun?
 Make it so!

It only took a minute to iron this patch on. I like this hoodie 300% more now than I did before. It isn't a full costume or too much to wear in everyday life. I love it.
Live long and prosper!

Thanks for reading along, now go make something fun for yourself.
And... boldly go where no one has gone before.

A No-Sew Hoodie Refashion

Hello Readers. I am in the mood for warm cozy clothes. I spent most of December wearing dresses for charity and trying to deal with a broken heater. I was cold ALL month. At least it seemed that way. I want comfort and layers of warmth. That is what brings us to this sweatshirt. I had a navy blue hoodie. It was comfortable but not very exciting. Could I do something fun with it?

Here it is. A simple ladies athletic hoodie sweat jacket.

I didn't do any sewing. I decided to cut off the sleeves and the waistband and zipper. I curved the front to cut off the pockets too. This jacket was a little big which was perfect because I wanted it loose enough that I could wear it over anything. Even a sweater. I want to be able to pile on layers and layers of clothes.

I had a loose sort of vest/jacket/shawl that felt weightless but added some nice warmth. The armholes kept it on easily as opposed to a shawl. (They always fall off my shoulders.) I went outside for pictures because I am having trouble with my lighting set-up. As we were taking pictures Some neighbors seemed to take notice.

I heard someone jogging over to see my not so athletic jacket.

Make that 3 someones. I don't know why they ran over. Maybe they wanted a picture? Here it is fellas.
