Tablecloth to Dishtowel

 Hello Readers. I have been upcycling a couple tablecloths I had. The last scrap of fabric became a dishtowel. 

Before and after.

I made a bathrobe, and honestly, it was difficult. 

 

I also made a 2 piece set that had a weird flower/crotch situation.

 

I used my serger around the edges of the scrap piece I had. It was a rectangle so it was almost a dishtowel already. 

 

I turned the edges under and sewed them down.

Tablecloth to Awkward 2 Piece Set

 Hello Readers. I thought this tablecloth would make a cute top and matching shorts. I was partially correct but problems developed as I got into it. Let me show you what I mean.

I used this shirt to cut out my top. I wanted a loose fit and this top was a great pattern. 

 

I used this sleeve as a pattern to cut out my sleeves. 

 

I had all my shirt pieces ready to put together. Everything was going well. 

 

I added bias tape to the cut edges of the shirt. 

 

I prepared to cut out my shorts. I didn't see my mistake yet. 

 

My pieces cut out fine. I still did not see that I was going to have a problem. 

 

I sewed the shorts together and added a waistband. 

 

 

And here it is. The flower placement is really... unfortunate. I could wear the shorts with a floral crotch center or a floral butt crack. Either way, this was not great.

 

I wore them to a watch party at my daughter's house and either way the shorts do not look great. The shirt is fine but the shorts were not a winner in my book. Thanks for reading along, now go make something fun for yourself.

Tablecloth to Top 2

 Hello Readers. Yesterday I posted about a shirt I made from a tablecloth. I liked it and I was super happy with it but what about the scraps? Let's talk about them. They were almost a shirt already. So... I made a second shirt. 

My second shirt from this tablecloth. 

I made this shirt first. 

The table cloth pattern looked great on the back of the shirt. 

This piece is what was left from the tablecloth when I was finished with the first shirt. When I looked at it I thought it looked like a halter style top. 

I cut the top bits off so I could get to the sewing machine. 

I turned all the cut edges under and stitched them down. 

I needed a string of some kind to tie around my neck. I sewed some bias tape closed and used that. 

I made a narrow casing across the top of the front of the shirt. I put the string through and tied it around my dress form's neck. This was coming together pretty well. 

I needed to close the back somehow. 

I used elastic to gather the top edge and sewed the 2 sides together.

Tablecloth to Top 1

 Hello Readers. This was a pretty linen tablecloth but it did not fit any table I had. I thought it would make a really cool top that I could wear all spring and summer. It was a really fun project to make, read on and see for yourself.

I cut the table cloth in half down the middle.

 

Here is the half I will use for my new shirt. It is folded in on the sides so I can get an idea what it will look like as a shirt. I like the brown edges along the hem and up the middle. 

I used this shirt as a pattern for the arm holes and neckline. 

I needed a sleeve pattern. I cut the sleeve off this shirt to use as a pattern. 

I cut my new sleeves from the other half of the tablecloth. 

 

This was my basic idea, I just needed to put the sleeves in place and finish the neck line.
 

I used clips to put the sleeves in place so I could sew them in. I like clips because pins can and will stab me in my hands and fingers. Ouch!

I sewed the sleeves in place. 

I added bias tape to the cut edges around the neckline. 

I also added bias tape ties in the front to keep in closed. 

The design is most prominent on the back of the shirt.

The Tablecloth Vest

 Hello Readers. I found this table cloth at a thrift store a while back and I thought the embroidery was just so pretty. I did put it on a table but I kept thinking it would be really pretty to wear. But what should I make?

It's a great table cloth! Or it was...

I cut out the pieces for a vest using Simplicity 8632. I tried to make sure I placed the embroidery in the front panels nicely.

I really didn't have enough fabric to make anything else.

I used my buttonholer to make the button holes on the front of my vest. 

 

I was pretty happy with how it turned out. I wanted it roomy, not fitted or tight.

***Year End Update***- I have worn this several times but it seemed like it was summery so I put it away for winter.

The Super Easy Tablecloth Dress

 Hello Readers. This is a super easy project for any beginning sewist. You just need a t-shirt and a tablecloth. I found this tablecloth a thrift store but you might have one at home you can use. And I know you must have a t-shirt at home you can grab for this project.

This tablecloth became a fun casual dress. 

I wanted to make my shirt and my tablecloth coordinate well so I matched the color of the t-shirt to one of the colors in the tablecloth.

The shirt fit well, it wasn't too tight or too loose. I cut the shirt in half. I wanted the shirt and skirt to meet under the bust line.

The tablecloth was a rectangular shape. It was bigger than I needed. If I used the whole table cloth it would have been a floor length dress. I cut my table cloth in half horizontally.

I cut the hemmed edge off the short edges of the table cloth. They were thick and would have been bulky in the dress.

I connected the short side of my tablecloth to make a tube. That will be my skirt.

I sewed the skirt to the cut off shirt.

The dress was a little shapeless (A LOT shapeless!) so I added some narrow elastic to the inside of the dress at the waist seam. It really helped the shape. 

I really liked this casual dress and it is perfect for lounging.Thanks for reading along, now go make something fun for yourself. 

***Year End Update***- I love this dress. It is the perfect casual dress.
